Another Open in the books and it was definitely one to remember. Highlights included disqualified equipment. (18.1) think xebex. New standards that shook most people up (HSPU) (18.4) and Castro's latest change up by giving the community an oppurtunity to vote on the final workout. (18.5) Below we took a look at each workout who won the workout and some of the top Instagram posts from the Open. Enjoy the recap!

Workout 18.1
Complete as many rounds as possible in 20 minutes of:
8 toes-to-bars
10 dumbbell hang clean and jerks
12/14-cal. row

Women use 35-lb. dumbbell
Men use 50-lb. dumbbell

1st Place Finish

Men: Nicolai Duus

Women: Samantha Briggs


The story here was all about the rower. Apparently there were a few in the community using xebex which created an advantage vs. the concept 2 rowers. HQ came out to squash it right away. 


Who out there using that xebex configuration?? 😡😂 - I wanna know!!

Workout 18.2

1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10 reps for time of:
Dumbbell squats
Bar-facing burpees
Women use 35-lb. dumbbells

Men use 50-lb. dumbbells
Workout 18.2a
1-rep-max clean
Time cap: 12 minutes to complete 18.2 AND 18.2a

Men: 18.2- Nicolai Duus 18.2a - Ionnis Papadopoulous

Women: 18.2- Ashleigh Corby 18.2a- Chelsea Sellers

Apparently 18.2a had a caused a large epidemic of loss of ability to control body fluids  😬It started trending pretty hard, almost as if it was now the "in" thing to do. Below is just one example of this type of behavior. 



Workout 18.3
2 rounds for time of:
100 double-unders
20 overhead squats
100 double-unders
12 ring muscle-ups
100 double-unders
20 dumbbell snatches
100 double-unders
12 bar muscle-ups

Women perform 80-lb. OHS, 35-lb. DB snatches
Men perform 115-lb. OHS, 50-lb. DB snatches
Time cap: 14 minutes

1st Place Finish
Men: Dakota Rager
Women: Tia-Claire Toomey

This workout pretty much seperated the elite from the rest of the pack. As a matter of fact the video below pretty much sums up the thoughts of thousands of hopeful athletes competing in the Open.

Workout 18.4
For time:
21 deadlifts, 155/225 lb.
21 handstand push-ups
15 deadlifts, 155/225 lb.
15 handstand push-ups
9 deadlifts, 155/225 lb.
9 handstand push-ups
21 deadlifts, 205/315 lb.
50-ft. handstand walk
15 deadlifts, 205/315 lb.
50-ft. handstand walk
9 deadlifts, 205/315 lb.
50-ft. handstand walk
Time cap: 9 min.

Outside of the insane time cap and the amount of heavy volume there was also a bit of drama over the new HSPU standards. Seemed most had a frustrating time adjusting to the new standard and it made for some interesting commentary on the interweb. Even Castro had his say on the matter: 



Workout 18.5 = 12.5 = 11.6
Complete as many reps as possible in 7 minutes of:
3 thrusters
3 chest-to-bar pull-ups
6 thrusters
6 chest-to-bar pull-ups
9 thrusters
9 chest-to-bar pull-ups
12 thrusters
12 chest-to-bar pull-ups
15 thrusters
15 chest-to-bar pull-ups
18 thrusters
18 chest-to-bar pull-ups
This is a timed workout. If you complete the round of 18, go on to 21. If you complete 21, go on to 24, etc.
Women use 65 lb.
Men use 100 lb.

In an Open first the community got to vote for 1 of 3 workouts. I was skeptical pre release of the workouts that this could've been a ruse of some sort. Picking your poison so to speak. And that it was - although it could've been worse - see post below for my nightmare:
